Mercury
Hii , welcome to my post . Today we are going to know about Mercruy (planet). So let's start :
Definition :
• Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar system
and the closest to the Sun.
• Its orbit around the Sun takes 87.97 Earth days, the
shortest of all the Sun's planets.
• It is named after the Roman god Mercurius (Mercury),
god of commerce, messenger of the gods, and
mediator between gods and mortals, corresponding
to the Greek god Hermes.
orbit as an inferior planet.
• Its apparent distance from the Sun as viewed from
Earth never exceeds 28°.
• This proximity to the Sun means the planet can only
be seen near the western horizon after sunset.
Facts :
• Mercury rotates in solar system in unique way.
• Mercury is the planet that orbits the closest to the
Sun.
• Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system –
only slightly larger than Earth's moon.
• Mercury is the fastest planet in our solar system –
traveling through Space at nearly 29 miles (47
kilometers) per second.
• The closer a planet is to the Sun, the faster it travels.
Since Mercury is the fastest planet.
• It has the shortest distance to travel around the Sun,
• It has the shortest year of all the planets in our solar
system – 88 days.
• Mercury is a rocky planet, also known as a terrestrial
planet.
• Mercury has a solid, cratered surface, much like the
Earth's moon.
• There are no rings around Mercury.
• Mercury has no moons.
• It is unlikely that life as we know it could survive on
Mercury due to solar radiation, and extreme
temperatures.
• Standing on Mercury's surface at its closest
approach to the Sun, our star would appear more
than three times larger than it does on Earth.
Quick Facts :
• Mass (1024kg)-------- 0.33
• Diameter (km)------- 4879
• Density (kg/m3)------- 5427
• Gravity (m/s2)------ 3.7
• Escape Velocity (km/s)------ 4.3
• Rotation Period (hours)------ 1407.6
• Length of Day (hours)------ 4222.6
• Orbital Period (days)------ 88
• Orbital Velocity (km/s)----- 47.4
• Orbital Inclination (degrees)------ 7
• Orbital Eccentricity------- 0.205
• Obliquity to Orbit (degrees)------- 0.034
• Mean Temperature (C)------- 167
• Surface Pressure (bars)------ 0
Composition:
• Mercury is a terrestrial planet, like like all of the 4
• It’s the smallest of them, and has a diameter of only
4,879 km at its equator.
• Mercury's thin atmosphere, or exosphere, is
composed mostly of oxygen (O2), sodium (Na),
hydrogen (H2), helium (He), and potassium (K).
Structure:
• Mercury is the second densest planet, after Earth.
• It has a large metallic core with a radius of about
1,289 miles (2,074 kilometers), about 85 percent of
the planet's radius.
• There is evidence that it is partly molten or liquid.
• Mercury's outer shell, comparable to Earth's outer
shell (called the mantle and crust), is only about 400
kilometers (250 miles) thick.
(i) Crust:
• The crust is similar in appearance to the that of the
Moon with mare-like plains and heavy cratering.
• A distinctive feature of the surface crust is the
presence of numerous narrow ridges, which might
have formed as Mercury's core and mantle cooled
and contracted after the crust had solidified. (ii) Core :
• Mercury's extreme high density infers that the
planet has a large, iron-rich core, with higher iron
content than that of any other major planet in the
Solar System.
Thank you.
